Every command in EDTRpad lives behind one key. Type / anywhere in your document and the menu opens right where your cursor is: headings, tables, images, lists, page breaks, formatting, export. Keep typing to filter it, press Enter to insert.

If you've used Notion, your hands already know this. If you haven't, here's what it means in practice: you never take your hands off the keyboard to insert a table, and you never go looking for a button again.

This is the real reason writing here is faster than Word. Not because the page loads quicker, though it does. Because the distance between wanting a table and having a table is four keystrokes: /tab and Enter.

Type `today`. Get today's date.

Some things you retype in every document: your name, your email, the date at the top of the page. Write the variable instead and it fills itself in the moment you close the brackets.

The date takes any format you want after a double colon — DD.MM.YYYY by default, or spell the month out, or go ISO. Month names follow whatever language the editor is in. Pick one from Insert ▸ Variable if you'd rather not remember the tokens.

What lands on the page is plain text, not a live field. A letter you wrote last March still says March when you open it today.

You know the sequence. Open Word and wait for it to load, then dismiss the sign-in prompt, then skip a template gallery you didn't ask for. Or open Google Docs, sign into the right account, wait for the file list, click New.

A real word processor, not a text box

Set page margins anywhere from 0.5 cm to 2 cm and print exactly what you see. If you've ever printed a document from a browser and watched the layout fall apart, this is the part you'll notice.

Without an account, there's no upload and no copy on our servers. What you type is written to your browser's local storage on this device, and it's still there when you come back to the tab.

Looking for WordPad?

Microsoft removed WordPad from Windows in the 24H2 update, after about thirty years. There's no setting to bring it back and no official replacement, which leaves an awkward gap, because Notepad can't bold a word and Word is a subscription.

EDTRpad covers what WordPad did: rich text, tables, images, page breaks and printing. It runs in a browser tab instead of an installed window, so it also works on a Mac, a Chromebook, a phone, or a computer you don't have permission to install software on. And it's a good deal faster to drive, because there's no menu bar between you and the thing you want.

Questions worth answering

What's the slash menu?+

Press / while writing and a searchable menu opens at your cursor with every command in the editor: headings, tables, images, lists, page breaks, export. Type to filter, Enter to insert. It replaces the toolbar for almost everything.

I use Notion. Will this feel familiar?+

Yes, that's the idea. Same / reflex, same get-out-of-the-way editing. The difference is what comes out the other end: Notion gives you a page in a workspace, EDTRpad gives you a document. Real page breaks, exact print margins, and a .docx you can email to someone who's never heard of any of this.

Do I need an account?+

No. Open the editor and type. An account is optional and exists only for syncing across devices.

If I close the tab, do I lose my work?+

No. Your document is saved continuously to your browser's local storage and is waiting when you come back in the same browser. If you clear your browsing data, that copy goes with it, so export a file or create an account for anything you can't afford to lose.

Does it work without an internet connection?+

Not currently. EDTRpad needs a connection to load the page. Once it's open your typing is saved locally, but we'd rather tell you this plainly than have you find out on a plane.

Is it safe to paste something confidential?+

Without an account, nothing you type is transmitted anywhere. It's written to your own browser and stays there. We have no copy to leak, hand over, or train on.

Will my .docx open properly in Word?+

Yes. Exports are standard .docx files that open with formatting intact in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Apple Pages.

Can I open Word files I already have?+

Yes. File > Open, or Ctrl+O, or just drag the file onto the page. .docx, .txt and .html are supported.

Is this Microsoft Word?+

No. EDTRpad is an independent word processor with no affiliation to Microsoft. It handles everyday documents; it isn't trying to replace Word for a 300-page thesis with tracked changes and citations.

What happened to WordPad?+

Microsoft removed it from Windows starting with version 24H2. It isn't a bug, and there's no supported way to reinstall it.

Is it really free?+
